Security and Protection

Who gets protection, and the U.S. Capitol Police.

Only the top congressional leaders receive 24/7 security details from the U.S. Capitol Police: the Speaker of the House, and the Senate Majority and Minority Leaders. Other members receive security assessments and protective measures based on specific threats, but do not have permanent security details.

After the shooting at a congressional baseball practice in 2017 and the January 6, 2021 Capitol breach, security spending increased significantly. Members can request enhanced security from the Capitol Police, and many have allocated office funds to security measures like cameras, panic buttons, and reinforced glass in district offices.

Members receive secure transportation to and from votes when Congress is in session. The Capitol complex itself is protected by the U.S. Capitol Police, a dedicated force of approximately 2,300 officers — one of the largest police forces in the country.
