Congressman Fields’ visit serves as a beacon of inspiration as he prepares to represent Louisiana’s 6<sup>th</sup>&nbsp;Congressional District.</span></p><p class="text-align-justify"><span>“Today, as I took the oath of office, I stood on the shoulders of giants like John Willis Menard, who courageously broke barriers in our nation’s history,” said Congressman Fields. “His fight for representation, even in the face of injustice, paved the way for so many African American leaders and inspires us to continue pushing for progress and equality.”</span></p><p class="text-align-justify">&nbsp;</p> <div class="align-left media-item media-image default"> <div class="image__field-media-image"> <div class="field__label font-weight-bold visually-hidden"> Image </div> <div class="field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="http://fields.house.gov/sites/evo-subsites/fields.house.gov/files/styles/large/public/evo-media-image/woodlawn-cemetery_0.jpg.webp?itok=UqoauylC" width="360" height="480" alt="Woodlawn Cemetery, Washington, DC" class="img-fluid"> </div> </div> </div> <p class="text-align-justify"><span>John Willis Menard was elected to Congress in 1868 to represent Louisiana’s 2<sup>nd</sup>&nbsp;Congressional District during the Reconstruction era. Despite winning his election, Menard was denied his seat due to the racial prejudice of the time. When Menard addressed the House of Representatives to defend his right to serve, he became the first African American to speak on the floor of Congress.
